Jackie Shane was a prominent\, pioneering Black trans woman\, soul singer\, who played Toronto clubs in the 1960s\, making appearances in London.\n\nThis evening features special guest queer rights advocate\, community leader\, and founder of The Rainbow Community of Canada\, Naomi Nadea\, who speaks to Shane’s fearlessness\, courage\, and talent in paving the way forward. Zahra McDoom\, TD Curator of Collections\, highlights Shane’s connection to our city. DESCRIPTION:The Black Education Fund (BEF) is committed to supporting Black students in achieving their educational goals through scholarships and bursaries that help reduce financial barriers to post-secondary education. \nSuccessful recipients of the BEF Roster Scholarship will receive $1\,000 per year for the duration of their post-secondary program\, up to a maximum of four years. \nEligibility Requirements \nApplicants must: \n\nBe a member of the Canadian Black community (Black person of discernible African ancestry who self-identifies as Black/African Canadian/African Caribbean/African American)\nBe a Canadian citizen or permanent resident\nBe accepted to a Canadian college\, trade school\, or university\nSubmit an essay (maximum 750 words) describing why they are applying and how they would benefit from a BEF scholarship\n\nIneligible Applicants \nApplicants are not eligible if they: \n\nHave previously received a Black Education Fund Roster Scholarship or a Parents of Black Children Canada Young\, Gifted and Black Scholarship\nAre employed by Parents of Black Children Canada or are affiliated with a PBC employee\, co-founder\, or board member\n\nApplication Deadline \nTuesday June 30\, 2026 at 11:59pm \nInterested applicants are encouraged to review the full application requirements and submit their application through the scholarship portal before the deadline.
